How the FIFA Ranking Calculator Works

FIFA determines national team standings using the SUM algorithm (a modified SUM/Elo rating formula). Points are added to or subtracted from a team’s existing total based on match results, relative opponent strength, and match importance.

Where:

P_{\text{before}}: A team's ranking points prior to the match.

I (Importance Weight): Scales match value (e.g., friendly games = 10, World Cup knockout stage matches = 60).

W (Result): $1.0$ for a win, $0.5$ for a draw, $0$ for a loss.

W_e (Expected Result): Calculated from the rating difference between both teams prior to kickoff.
