Zinedine Zidane Takes Charge as France Head Coach

The French Football Federation named Zinedine Zidane head coach of the France national team. Zidane signed a four-year deal that runs until August 2030. The agreement keeps the former Real Madrid boss in charge through Euro 2028 and the 2030 tournament.

Zidane officially begins his new job on August 1. He waited five years without taking a club team to secure this role. FFF president Philippe Diallo announced the news at press talks in Paris.

Replacing Didier Deschamps

Zidane replaces former teammate Didier Deschamps. Deschamps left the team after fourteen years in charge. His term ended after the 2026 summer tournament, where France finished in fourth place.

August 1, 2026: Zidane starts his duties as head coach.

September 25, 2026: First match away against Turkey in the UEFA Nations League.

September 28, 2026: Away match against Belgium.

October 2, 2026: Home debut against Italy at the Stade de France.

Zidane turned down offers from top clubs during his five years away from coaching. He stated that leading France was his main goal. He plans to bring an attacking play style to the squad.
