The Football Association has sent a shockwave through Old Trafford this morning, Wednesday, by handing Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte a significant six-match suspension.
The ban stems from a "non-standard" misconduct incident during the tunnel area following United’s narrow victory over West Ham late last month. The FA’s independent regulatory commission found that the Uruguayan international acted in an "improper and confrontational manner" toward match officials, including the use of abusive language.
The Incident: What Happened in the Tunnel?
While the match itself ended in celebration for Michael Carrick’s side, the scenes behind the scenes were far more volatile. According to the FA’s charge sheet, Ugarte was involved in a heated exchange with the fourth official as the teams left the pitch.
The Charge: Ugarte was charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1, which covers "improper conduct" that brings the game into disrepute.
The Evidence: Tunnel cameras and witness statements from stadium security reportedly confirmed that Ugarte’s behavior was "unusually aggressive," leading the FA to designate this as a Non-Standard Case, which carries much harsher penalties than a typical red card.
The Fine: In addition to the six-game playing ban, Ugarte has been fined £60,000 and warned as to his future conduct.

This suspension could not come at a worse time for Michael Carrick. Since taking the interim role, Carrick has relied on Ugarte to provide the defensive "bite" that allows the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes to flourish.

The Tactical Shift: Carrick may opt to drop Mason Mount into a deeper "eight" role alongside Mainoo, though this would sacrifice some of the defensive stability Ugarte provides.
