Chelsea’s defensive crisis may finally be easing at a critical juncture of the season. Speaking ahead of Monday’s Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest, interim head coach Calum McFarlane provided a significant double injury boost regarding captain Reece James and defender Levi Colwill.
As the Blues look to snap a five-match losing streak in the league, the return of two key figures to the training pitch has provided a much-needed lift at Cobham.
Back in the Fold: Training Returns
McFarlane confirmed that both James and Colwill have successfully rejoined team training sessions this week.
Levi Colwill: It has been a much longer road for the 23-year-old, who has missed nearly a year of action after tearing his ACL during the 2025 pre-season tour.
"Promising" Progress, but Caution Remains
While the update is positive, McFarlane was quick to temper expectations regarding a starting role for either player this Monday.
“We’ve got Reece and Levi back in training, and both are looking good,” McFarlane told reporters. “They are looking promising, but we are taking it day by day. Levi has been out for a very long time, and we don't want to push too much, but hopefully, they come through.”
The interim manager emphasized that with a busy end-of-season schedule—including the FA Cup Final against Manchester City on May 16—the medical staff will be extremely careful not to rush their return and risk further long-term damage.
Chelsea’s Defensive Outlook
| Player | Injury Type | Status | Potential Return |
| Reece James | Hamstring | Training | In squad vs. Forest (Likely) |
| Levi Colwill | ACL (Post-Op) | Training | In squad vs. Forest (Likely) |
| Benoit Badiashile | Illness | Recovered | Available |
| Trevoh Chalobah | Ankle | Doubt | Late fitness test |
Why It Matters: The Road to Wembley
With Chelsea currently languishing in 8th place and their hopes of a top-five finish mathematically "improbable," the focus has shifted entirely to the FA Cup.
The availability of James and Colwill wouldn't just improve the backline for the Nottingham Forest match; it would give the Blues their best possible chance of defensive stability heading into the Wembley showdown with Manchester City. For McFarlane, having his captain back in the locker room is also a "brilliant" leadership boost for a squad that has struggled for confidence in recent weeks.
