The expanded 48-team format of the 2026 FIFA World Cup was designed to give teams more lifelines than ever before.
Yet, for some nations, the math has already run out. Following the conclusion of the second round of group-stage fixtures, several countries have suffered back-to-back defeats, leaving them with zero points and absolutely no mathematical route to qualification.
Here is the breakdown of the countries whose World Cup dreams have officially come to an end after Matchday 2.
🇭🇹 Haiti (Group C)
Haiti earned the unfortunate distinction of becoming the very first nation officially knocked out of the 2026 tournament.
🇹🇷 Türkiye (Group D)
Arguably the most shocking departure of the tournament so far, Türkiye has been sent packing after just 180 minutes of football.
🇹🇳 Tunisia (Group F)
Tunisia's campaign never truly got off the ground in Group F. Facing highly organized opposition, successive tactical breakdowns left them pointless and struggling for goals. With the top two teams in their group pulling completely out of reach, the Carthage Eagles have zero chance of finishing high enough to challenge for a wild-card third-place spot.
🇯🇴 Jordan (Group J)
Jordan's tournament exit was confirmed in heartbreaking fashion during the Matchday 2 slate. After an opening fixture defeat, they struck early against Algeria and looked poised to keep their dream alive.
The Cruel Math of Matchday 2
Why are these teams out when some others on 0 points are still alive? It all comes down to how the points are distributed above them. In groups where two powerhouse teams dominate and win both of their opening matches, it creates a scenario where the bottom two teams are left with zero points.
However, if those two bottom teams haven't played each other yet (like Senegal and Iraq in Group I), one of them can still theoretically finish third with 3 points and try to advance via the wild-card rule. For Haiti, Türkiye, Tunisia, and Jordan, the mathematical distribution of points among the remaining teams in their respective groups means even a final-day win won't save them from the bottom slots.
